Temporary bans with varying lengths depending on the severity of the infraction have always worked well for us to give problem users distance from the site and time to consider their actions before they return. Before applying the temporary ban, the user should be given a clear and final warning about the consequences, stating they are at risk of being banned permanently if they break the rules again.

Here’s another moderation tip: Warning points shouldn’t last forever. If a period of time has passed without any additional violations, users should be rewarded for their good behavior and have those points expire. We believe warning points should expire after 6 months. This gives users a chance to improve their behavior without carrying a permanent penalty and still gives us a good length of time to monitor their site activity.
